Jurby Parish rates for the year 2023/24 will be £1.49 which is an increase of £0.24 from last year’s rate of £1.25.
Due to a period of several years using reserves to negate any large rate increases this has now become unsustainable, increased costs for refuse disposal and government increases in incinerator gate fees, proposed highway charter, a significant raise in contributions requested for the Northern Swimming Pool and MUA charges for maintenance have all been contributory factors in the setting of the 23/24 rates.
This rate is the minimum that could be set to maintain the current service provision.
In conjunction with high inflation rate of over 10% this year and anticipated high inflation rates in 23/24, the Board have had no option but to try and offset these factors whilst maintaining an expected level of service to Jurby residents.
Whilst the parish hall remains an asset to the area, for a number of years its usage has not met the annual running costs of maintenance, staff and utilities. The Commissioners hope to minimise future rises by increasing utilisation of the Parish Hall which currently costs in excess of £6,500 net pa which equates to nearly £0.11 of the total Parish rate.
The Commissioners are committed to obtaining value for the Parish and in the past year have put the contracts out to tender for the Hedge Cutting and Road sweeping contracts and will continue to assess contractual opportunities as and when necessary to obtain the appropriate services.
Whilst the increases are necessary and unavoidable , the Commissioners welcome any Parish members to the monthly meetings to discuss any issues and challenges facing us all in the coming year.
